African American Music Reference is a critically-acclaimed and comprehensive reference database chronicling the rich history of African American music that comprises more than 67,000 pages.

African American Music Reference provides comprehensive coverage of black American musical expression from colonial times to the present, including blues, jazz, spirituals, civil rights songs, slave songs, minstrelsy, rhythm and blues, gospel, and other forms.

It provides coverage of a wide range of material types, including discographies, biographies, anthologies, encyclopedias, critical works, photographs and other images, lyrics, sheet music, chronologies, and textbooks.

African American Music Reference brings a new dimension to topics relevant to the African American experience, including civil rights, religious history, mining and plantation history, emancipation, regional studies, and many more.

Authorized users

  • customers's currently enrolled full- or part-time students, employees, faculty, staff, affiliated researchers, distance learners, and visiting scholars.
  • Walk-in patrons are authorized to access to Product(s) while physically present at the Site
  • are bound by same restrictions as Customer

Permitted use

Authorized users may

  • make a limited numbers of hard or electronic copies of text portions of the Product(s) for research, education, or other non-commercial or non-performance use only
  • access to a stream of video recordings in the Product(s) may be only via the Customer's network

Prohibited use

Authorized users may not

  • decompile or reverse engineer the Product(s); modify or create a derivative work; remove, obscure, or modify copyright notices; sell, distribute or commercially exploit the Product(s); or transfer, assign or sublicense this license
  • allow users to download the streaming videos or otherwise make copies

Access

Access by IP-address in the university network.

Authorized use includes remote access through an authentication (proxy) server that guarantees access only by Authorized Users.

Interlibrary loan

The use of the paper format of small insignificant portions of the Product(s) as a source for Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
